Nepal, een land in Azië, ligt in de Himalaya tussen India en China (Tibet). Nepal heeft een lange geschiedenis die teruggaat tot voor het begin van de christelijke jaartelling. Het is het geboorteland van de Boeddha. Door de ligging van het land heeft het zowel Indiase als Tibetaanse invloeden.

Kathmandu (काठमांडौ) is de hoofdstad van Nepal. De bevolking bestaat uit 822.000 personen. 1,5 miljoen mensen wonen in de agglomeratie. De stad is gelegen in een vallei aan de rivier de Vishnumati op 1350 meter boven zeeniveau. De stad is bekend om zijn vele Boeddhistische tempels en paleizen, waarvan de meesten uit de 17e eeuw dateren.
